The Queens District, especially Francis Lewis Lodge #273, has a Brother we all should be very proud of and try to emulate, Brother Lou Slavicek, DSA. Over the past 15 years he and his wife Myrt have been delivering two scholarship awards to Bayside High School Seniors for citizenship. Unfortunately, 5 years ago Myrt passed on, but Brother Lou went on to deliver the scholarships and he also started a scholarship in memory of his beloved wife. As Myrt was an excellent nurse, this scholarship is given only to those seniors who will be entering into the nursing field. Brother Lou told me a quick story about once when he was feeling sick, figuring he could get some good advice, he asked his wife what he should do, her answer was,” Go see a doctor!”.
On the morning of June 6, 2016 he again went to Bayside High School to impart the scholarships and he asked me to join him. The auditorium erupted into thunderous applause when he was announced. To show all of us that nothing gets by him Brother Lou announced that the flickering exit light in the balcony was doing the same thing when he graduated from the school in 1945! He then proceeded to award the scholarships.
Brother Lou is an outstanding example of True Masonry, he never looked for accolades he just wanted to help his community. Brothers, look around your neighborhood what can you do to improve the standard of your community? Now, go out and get it done! Thank you Brother Lou and thank you Brothers for taking up the challenge!
Please Brothers, if you have a story you would like to tell your Brothers, contact me and I will help you write it, you will get all the credit. We need to hear more about what you have done and are doing. Thank you.
